Avoid ANY loops. When a power cable or pipe is connect in such a way that a loop is formed, you are putting some strain on the server and your own machine.
Pipes should be compacted. The less pipes, the less strain.
Buildcraft vs RedPower:
Buildcraft has some really awesome pipes but it is still buggy. Buggy enough to cause crashes. Buildcraft also has the tendency to not compensate for overflow. If there is not enough space for the items it is collecting, it dumps them on the ground, leaving entities. This tends to lead to entity lag.
RedPower is intelligent. If no space exists in a chest, it holds items in a buffer system till there is space. This is avoids entity lag but comes at a price. CPU usage is raised because of all the calculations required.
I still prefer RedPower, but you are still welcome to use Buildcraft as long as there are safety measures in place.
